Our Approach

We have established three guiding principles:

Engage in positive solutions and actions addressing pressing local issues at the community level.

Collaborate with those organizations and individuals doing innovative and vital work.

Strive for Board consensus on all our partnership determinations.

The geographic area of our grant making is mainly focused within the greater Four Corners region of the Southwest US with a few select national and international legacy grantees. Virga administers general operating grants in the core four Focus Areas of Environmental Stewardship, Indigenous Sovereignty, Youth and Social Empowerment, and The Arts. Generally, there are no Letters of Intent, grant applications, or reporting. Virga prefers earnest and honest conversations, and relationships that evolve into thriving partnerships towards the greater good.

Virga is a small, private family foundation performing our own due diligence. We are informed through the expertise of our grantees, a network of advisors and our Board and Staff’s best judgement towards the fulfillment of our mission. We work to address the larger issues of climate disaster and global conflict in a small way through our Rapid Response grant making, and also address a few select national and international concerns, all using the same methods, and guided by the same principles.

Our Process

The Virga Foundation’s grantmaking process is completed once annually, with all determinations driven by consensus-based decision making by the Board and Staff. The Virga Foundation makes a final determination of grantees during an annual Board Retreat.

We prefer to engage sustainable, long-term partnerships that have the strongest potential to create positive outcomes within our communities, rather than one and done relationships.
